Area United Way raises more in 2011 - www.roanoke.com

Even in a "sluggish" economy, the United Way raised $6.14 million in donations and pledges in 2011 for programs in the Roanoke Valley. That's $100,000 more than 2010.
Debbie Meade, president and publisher of The Roanoke Times and chairwoman of the 2011 United Way campaign, announced the new figures at United Way of Roanoke Valley's annual campaign awards celebration at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, according to a news release from the nonprofit organization.
